Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Technology

Robust attached-growth biological treatment utilizing floating virgin-polypropylene carrier media kept in continuous motion to degrade high organic loads without high sludge return.

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Technology

Advanced Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor Technology for Efficient Biological Treatment

The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) System is a biological wastewater treatment technology that uses specially designed floating biofilm carrier media to provide a large protected surface area for the growth of microorganisms.

The carrier media remains in continuous motion within the aeration or biological reactor. Microorganisms grow as a biofilm on the media surface and help degrade biodegradable organic pollutants present in wastewater. Depending on the process configuration, MBBR can also support nitrification and denitrification for nitrogen removal.

Wastewater enters the MBBR reactor where carrier media is retained inside the tank using suitable media retention screens.

Aeration or mixing keeps the media continuously moving, providing contact between wastewater and the attached biomass. The biofilm consumes biodegradable pollutants, while excess detached biomass is subsequently separated through a downstream solid-liquid separation process.

K&C Envirotech can provide MBBR systems using engineered carrier media selected according to the application and design requirements.

Important media characteristics include:

  • High protected surface area
  • Suitable material density for fluidization
  • High resistance to wastewater conditions
  • Long service life
  • Good biofilm attachment characteristics
  • Appropriate filling ratio based on process design
  • Suitable geometry for efficient mixing and mass transfer

Note: Media filling percentage and protected surface area should be selected based on the required organic/nitrogen loading and process design rather than using a single standard value for every application.

Advantages of MBBR

Compact Biological Treatment
The high surface area provided by the carrier media allows a substantial quantity of active biomass to be maintained within the reactor.

Easy Upgradation
MBBR can be incorporated into existing aeration tanks to increase biological treatment capacity, subject to hydraulic and process constraints.

Process Flexibility
Different reactor configurations can be used for carbon removal, nitrification and denitrification.

Operational Simplicity
Unlike conventional activated sludge, the MBBR process does not require a return activated sludge (RAS) system to maintain the attached biofilm.

Robust Biofilm Process
The attached-growth biomass provides a stable biological population and can be advantageous where variations in wastewater loading occur.
